5. El Jardín Secreto de Salvador Bachiller (Calle de la Montera, 37)

When you need a break from Malasaña, walk ten minutes towards Gran Vía. Climb the stairs of the Salvador Bachiller building and you’ll find an oasis. El Jardín Secreto is a terrace straight out of a storybook: hanging plants, lanterns, and cocktails garnished with edible flowers. It’s the perfect place to transition from afternoon to evening. Here, people speak softly, the lights dim, and selfies are inevitable (though the place holds its own). From up high, you can see the chaos of the city, but you’re calm, cocktail in hand, watching the sunset over Madrid’s rooftops.

6. Maravillas Club (Calle de San Vicente Ferrer, 33)

The next step is logical: it’s time to dance. Maravillas Club is one of those places that smells of gigs and memories. In its basement, emerging bands, impromptu DJs, and more than one group that later headlined festivals have performed. The purple lights and the energy of the dance floor make time lose meaning. Here, no one asks where you’re from or what you do: everyone is too busy enjoying themselves. And when the bassist strikes the first chord, you feel what locals call Madrid en vena (Madrid in your veins).

7. Café Moderno (Plaza de las Comendadoras, 1)

The last stop of the night is a descent into calm. Café Moderno is an old-school café-bar, with red sofas, vintage lamps, and a terrace overlooking the quietest square in the neighbourhood. Perfect for closing your eyes for a moment and breathing. Here, the waiters speak slowly, the music turns down, and time seems to become your friend. Order a coffee or a drink, it doesn’t matter. What’s important is that the city is no longer chasing you: you set the pace.

Walk back along Calle del Pez. At this hour, the bar lights reflect in the puddles, and shutters come down slowly. Malasaña yawns but doesn’t sleep.
